Chandra's Diary

Dear Diary,
Thanksgiving is coming soon. It's my favorite holiday. I have so much to be grateful for--my family, my friends, my books, my school...and pumpkin pie! I'm even grateful for Shannon. Even though she's mean, she makes me realize how silly it is to pick on other kids. Wouldn't it be more fun to be friends?

Dear Diary,
My mom just gave me a beautiful book. It's called Reach for the Moon, by Samantha Abeel. It's a book of poems written by a girl with autism. I wish I could write that well! I guess kids with disabilities really can do great things.

I read a very interesting book today, called True Confessions of a Former Bully, by I.M Nicer. Did you know that sometimes kids bully because they are being bullied by someone else?

My little brother, Max, was so funny today. He put a straw in his milk and was blowing bubbles with it. We both cracked up. People think just because he has autism he's weird or something. But he's just a kid like everyone else.

Dear Diary,
It sure was fun to see my grandparents over the holidays. Grandma said I'm turning into a beanpole. It sounded nice when she said it. But it's funny; if someone who didn't like me called me "beanpole," it would sound mean. Why is that?

Dear Diary,
Sorry I haven't written for a few days. I've been so busy with my new school. Remember how nervous I was last week? Well, I'm not now. Most of the kids are cool, and my new teacher, Mrs. Bridge, is super nice. And you should see the library! I've never seen so many books.
There are a few kids, though, that are kind of mean. I heard one of them making fun of this boy, Jay, just because he wears hearing aids. Why do kids do that? Makes me feel mad and sad, all at once.

Dear Diary,
School starts tomorrow! I have a really cool outfit. I'm so excited! I met this nice girl in my neighborhood. Her name is Molly. She's going to be in my class, and we're going to ride the bus together. I'm glad. It's nice to have a friend. Maybe things will be okay after all.

Dear Diary,
Just a few more days and I start my new school! I'm a little nervous. It's hard to be the "new kid," especially when the school year has already started. What if the kids don't like me? At my old school they did, but I don't know. Sometimes I just feel different. I wear glasses, and I always have my nose in a book, and my little brother has autism, and...
What do you think, Dear Diary? Should I be worried?
